A workshop to better understand the interactions between environmental change and climate change and the risk of zoonotic emergence in Belgium
See moreBiodiversiScape: Inviting biodiversity into every consideration of landscape and buildings!
Belgium is densely populated and highly urbanized, which fragments the habitats of animals and plants. This hinders their reproduction, food supply, and movement, and contributes to biodiversity loss. The federal BiodiversiScape programme of FPS Health aims to address this issue. By strengthening the green-blue network in and around cities, biodiversity is restored and the resilience of ecosystems is increased.
Four federal partners – Defense, NMBS, Infrabel, and the Buildings Agency – are making their sites available for biodiversity-friendly interventions in (re)development, construction, and renovation projects. Examples include de-sealing parking lots, replacing exotic plants with native alternatives, installing green roofs, and using sustainable materials in renovations.
In time, project developers and construction promoters from the private sector will also be more than welcome to join the movement.
